So I did some liveblogging of the book on my tumblr. MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK AT THOSE LINKS:

FIRST HALF

SECOND HALF

Basically, I loved it, it's a return to how I used to feel about the books, before Ghost Story and Cold Days, and how I thought Changes needed another draft or two before being published. I was all excited and happy and yelling and crying and gasping and shocked and just overall really pleased with Skin Game.

Except for two things: the treatment of Murphy overall, and the treatment of Hannah at the very end. I might have to make another post about that.

But overall, MUCH SQUEEING and MYTHOLOGY FANGIRLING ALL OVER THE PLACE and YAAAAAAAAAAAY and NOOOOOOOOO and YESSSSSSSSSSSS.

So yeah. Mostly happiness. Some issues with some bits of the book.

X-Posted to my tumblr

So I'm reading the Hannibal books this summer, because why not. Not crazy about Thomas Harris's style but it sucks me in none the less. Great characters. He paints a really nasty picture of the world with very sparse words. So ... that's good.

I'm getting more and more apprehensive about this impending Clarice/Hannibal stuff I've heard so much about that happens in Hannibal. I'm only on The Silence of the Lambs right now but it's making me ever so anxious.

Packing for MAGFest. I have a surprising amount of room left in my small suitcase, and I'm pretty sure I'm packing way too many shirts. Then again, my jumpsuit hasn't arrived yet, if it doesn't get here by Tuesday I'll have to go to Goodwill and frantically try to find something I can use

Still, lots of room in the suitcase. And about 10-12 hours on trains and busses and waiting in stations, depending on whether I'm going down or coming home.

So ... books! I'm staring at a pretty decent stack here, trying to figure out which I should take, which I should leave. Deciding which to take off of my meticulously organized/stacked shelves (wasn't that an event this summer, jeez ...) was the first step: no hardcovers; nothing I have on audio.

Now, though, there's all these books I've never read before, so I don't know if they'll be good companions for this trip or dead weight I'll regret after twenty pages. Auuuuuuuugh.

I'm thinking Night Watch (the Russian one, not the Discworld one) would be a good start. Other than that ... I dunno. This might take a while.

Also, loading up my iPod with audiobooks and podcasts and some choice playlists. And I'll have my laptop, and the trains I'm taking all promise WiFi, so I'll be ok. I just want to get some nice reading in, since I'll have the time. I don't have a lot of reading time at college, I've taken to reading during dinner but then my friends show up and I can't read and eat and be sociable all at the same time, so I've been about a hundred pages from the end of Dodger for the past two months and I'm NEVER going to find out whodunit at this point!

I think some of my nonfiction history books are a good idea. Take a few hours to get lost in those, with limited distractions. Pity my copy of 1776 is a hardcover. I love you David McCullough, but your book is too heavy for me to lug to MAGFest!

Annoying: Trying to remember the name of that one (tame) yaoi manga you bought via amazon years ago and felt like such a grownup reading secretly late at night and hid behind other books on the shelf so your mother would never, ever find it.

Frustrating: Failing to remember the name of that manga, and the manga that was being advertised in the back that you'd really like to buy now, please, if only you could remember the title.

Inspired: Remembering that the manga is under a pile of books in your room back home, and thinking about calling up your mom so she can tell you the title.

Awkward: Realizing that you can't do that because OH MY GOD MOM LOOKING AT YOUR (TAME, DOESN'T REALLY COUNT AS PORN AT ALL) PORN, THE SHAME, YOU CANNOT DEAL, SHE CANNOT SEE THE STUPID POORLY-WRITTEN PIRATE MANGA. IT IS ONE OF YOUR FEW SECRETS!

Embarrassing: Googling "Cowboy Indian Yaoi Manga" and sorting through dozens of non-helpful links.

The Lesson: Don't leave your not really porn at all, honestly, it's pretty pathetic to be honest, there is much better stuff online, you WRITE much better stuff online, but the pictures are so pretty porn at home. Even if you think it'd be more embarrassing for your roommate to see it on your shelf, or a visiting friend seeing it. TAKE ALL THE DIRTY BOOKS WITH YOU TO COLLEGE. YOU DID WITH "A BEGINNGER'S GUIDE TO S&M" YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT WITH THE SILLY YAOI MANGA TOO!

Why am I looking for yaoi manga now? I need to shower and sleep!
Oh right, aforementioned roommate is awake doing late homework and listening to loud music. That's why you're putting off sleep. Time for shower and sleep: she'll get quiet or move to the hallway then. It's late enough to justify that.

Should have been watching Doctor Who and recapping. Instead I'm merrily skipping through the Sherlock Kink Meme archives, organized the piles and boxes of books in my room (there was much dust), trying to figure out which books I'll be taking to college with me (I can't take twelve, there are more books already there in my dorm!) and debating whether to get Neverwhere on audio or Odd and the Frost Giants on audio or both, because both are read by Neil Gaiman and I have been known to get foolish with my money when his voice involved. He's like a siren. A creepy, British siren ...
I mean, it's ok, I got an iTunes giftcard for Christmas, I could use it on an an audiobook or two ... I should really make it last a couple months and buy a song here or a song there, but his voice is so soothing ... *gets glassy-eyed*

Gah, so many books! Books overcrowding the shelves, books piled on top of the shelves, books in my room, books in the sewing room, books in the living room, books back in my dorm room, books everywhere! Separated them into several piles. Now there's the books I want kept readily available at home because I want to take them to college and then bring them back at breaks and bring others to my dorm, the books that I are good/fun but I can stand to have stored away, and books that are informative but I can stand to have stored away, and the many books I haven't read yet but intend to because they looked interesting once upon a time. Oh, and five+ shelves of "kid's books" that are nostalgic and I can't bear to be parted from. Because I am a pack rat.
