This crap got green-lit? Really?
Argh. It's everything that's wrong with modern crime dramas, and most modern dramas, period. The smug, snarky, asshole lead who we're supposed to like despite him being a total asshole to everyone and anyone just because he CAN, abusing his power, ignoring due process, leering at women, ridiculing his boss, using people. There are ways to do this right. (Re: Sherlock ... most of the time. House ... at first. Um ... Cal Lightman? Though admittedly I cut Cal a lot of slack because he's played by Tim Roth, whom I want to do absolutley filthy things with despite or perhaps - disturbingly - because of the fact that he's old enough to be my parent.) But there are so many, many, MANY ways to do this wrong. So many shows do this. The "rebellious upper-middle-class/lower-upper-class white cop guy" character. I fucking hate it. He's not funny enough to be amusing, not empathetic enough to be endearing, not badass or clever enough to be cool, not troubled enough to be interesting. He's just ... bland and vaguely annoying.
The side characters are phoned-in and walking ticked-off boxes as opposed to real characters. The ethnic "Smart Guy" best friend. The pathetic boss we're supposed to laugh at, despite justifiably calling the main character out on his actions. The long-haired, "but not too tan" technically-single-but-not-really-for-drama-reasons potential love interest lady who's Putting Herself Through School and Has a Medical Job and Has A Young Son. Groooooooooooan.
( Spoilers for the end of the episode ... not that you'll care, mind, the show is not worth your time. )
This isn't even like Burn Notice, where I got several episodes in, despite knowing it wasn't very good and the lead was bland and boring and kinda meh and a little annoying. I still watched it, as a boring guilty pleasure I could predict when I wanted to take a break from good shows and let my brain cool down. That had some funny lines and interesting concepts at least, and even a little OT3 teasing to keep me smirking sometimes.
This was just ... bad.
Did I mention there was golf? Gratuitous shots of golf? FUCK GOLF! It's so ... boring ... arrrrrrrgh ...
