Title: The Definition of Is
Rating: PG-13 (one of my tamer fics)
Word Count: 1,307 (aprox.)
Pairing: Rosie/Carter
Disclaimer: I do not own Princess Protection Program. The Walt Disney Evil Empire Company does. PLEASE DO NOT SUE ME! (Disney, please keep making movies with characters whose sexualities are ambiguous. It’s the only reason I watch any of your crap anymore.)
Warnings: A pairing I’m pretty sure none of you are familiar with. Femslash. Also, the girls concerned are both under 18.
Spoilers: for the movie. See the movie. It’s not half bad. The fic of these two that’s out there is worth the 90-odd minutes of silly-bland movie.
Summary: Post-movie, (but before becoming agents) Rosie is at a press conference and confronted with some questions that stir up flashbacks.
A/N: I watched Princess Protection Program last night. (I am an awful, awful person, I know. I was drained and bored, I watched a Disney Channel Movie, these things happen.) Uh … LesYay, much? All they needed was a little kiss at the end to fully cement it for me that the movie was the story of a closeted lesbian coming out with the help of a beautiful foreign princess. “He is not worthy of you” indeed! And the movie ends with the two of them being sexy secret agents together! Yes, I squeed at that, and I’m not ashamed!
I had to write fic of these two. HAD TO. I may write more. In fact, I could write another giant crossover (of doom) including that Spy vs Spy stuff I’ve wanted to write for a while now, tie it into that Carmen/Waldo story I started months ago (shut up, it’s canon and you know it!) and add Rosie and Carter: Spy Girls!
(No, I have not been spending too much time in the sun, why do you ask?)
Anyhoodle, hopefully this is compressible to people who have not seen the movie. I wanted to keep this sweet and tried out a new style (Rosie’s voice is hard, she sounds a bit like Dug from Up to me, ya know, not robotic, but like the translator is stuck on ‘formal’.) I refer to Rosalinda as such in the press conference bits, and as ‘Rosie’ in the italicized flashbacky bits, ’cause that’s what Carter calls her.
Comment if ya read (or know of a place I might post this …) or see any grammatical or spelling mistakes, as this is unbetaed.

“Would you care to comment on the recent pictures of you with another woman, your highness?” asked a reporter for a tabloid magazine of semi-repute, brandishing his microphone like a sword.
Rosalinda Maria Montoya Fioré took a deep breath, smiling her old princess smile. “Yes. The photographer got my good side; I wish to employ him for the anniversary ball.”
The crowd laughed, while inwardly Rosalinda pictured upending the nearest punch bowl over the reporter’s head.
“But are you in a relationship with this … Carter Mason?” the reporter pressed.
Rosalinda raised her eyes so that she was looking directly at the cameras. “Yes, I am in a romantic relationship with Carter Mason, another woman.”
“Carter, you must see these.” Rosalinda set a folder down on the coffee table.
Carter warily approached, sat down on the couch opposite Rosie, and flicked through the folder. Inside were pictures of herself and Rosie at the
“Wow …” Carter laughed nervously. “This photographer’s even better than the one the school hired!”
“Carter, this is serious.” Rosalinda folded her hands in her lap and bit her lip. “These photos will be published in magazines all over
Carter’s eyes widened, but not with shock. “Are you … regretting us?”
Rosie’s jaw dropped. “No! No, Carter, I am not regretful!” she shook her head vigorously. “I understood the risks, but I am not sure that you did. Eighty-seven percent of Costa Luna is Roman-Catholic. I do not know for sure how my people will react to this, but I suspect it will not be favorable. I could be overthrown again. This sort of behavior is illegal in Costa Estrella. General Kane will certainly use this to his advantage; even in prison he has connections.” she bit her lip. “I told you that Costa Luna was not on most maps. This will put Costa Luna on the map.”
Carter had begun blinking a lot during Rosie’s speech. She sniffled and tried to pass it off as a cough.
Rosie crossed over to Carter and sat next to her, taking her hand and patting her on the back. “Carter, this is not just about me. This is also about you. You will be under spotlights. Reporters will show you no mercy. You will have to fight for privacy. To the world, you will no longer be ‘Carter Mason.’ You will not even be ‘Bait Girl’ anymore. You will be Queen Rosalinda’s consort.” she took Carter’s face in her hands and looked her in the eye. “To you, this may seem like a little thing: dating another girl. But by being your girlfriend, I fear I am asking too much of you –”
Carter leaned forward and kissed her.
Rosie’s hands flailed, eventually tangling in Carter’s hair and deepening the kiss. Carter gently pushed Rosie down onto her back; the folder slid to the floor, photos scattering across the carpet.
“I work in a bait shop,” Carter said, coming up for air. “I’m not scared of anything, not even reporters.” she cocked her head to the side. “And did you just call me your girlfriend?”
Rosie grinned. “Did I?”
Carter laughed, and began unbuttoning Rosie’s shirt.
“How long have you been in this relationship, reina?” asked the same reporter, edging as close as Rosalinda’s bodyguards would allow.
“About three months. It’s a long-distance relationship, as she lives in
“They’re not going to let us in.” Carter said.
“Why not?” Rosie asked, perplexed.
“Well …you know …” Carter waved her hand vaguely in the air. “We’re two girls … going to the prom … together together …they won’t let us. We’ll have to sneak in around back or something.”
“If they do not let us,” Rosie said, face set, “I shall order them to let us attend this ball!”
Carter laughed. “You can’t order the principal of my school …besides, I keep telling you, this isn’t a ball, it’s just my Prom. Difference.”
“You have agonized over selecting a dress, your father has ordered you a limo, and several young men asked you to accompany them to this event.” Rosie raised an eyebrow. “Sounds like a ball to me!”
Carter giggled. “Yeah, I guess so …” she took Rosie’s hand. “Come on, they’ll have to let us in. After all,” she drew herself up regally, “I’m not taking Donny or Ed: I’m taking the Queen of Costa Luna.” she grinned, kissing her girlfriend on the lips.
A female reporter elbowed her way forward. “General Kane –”
“Senor Kane is no longer a General, madam.” Rosalinda corrected the flustered looking woman. “He was stripped of that rank, and most of his wealth, before being imprisoned for attempted kidnapping on American soil and his coup of Costa Luna last autumn.”
“Apologies, your majesty,” the reporter blushed, collecting herself. “But, in a recent interview, Senor Kane had some remarks concerning your relationship with one Carter Mason.” she held up a paper and began to read “And I quote: ‘This further proves that Queen Rosalinda is too young to govern Costa Luna. She is jeopardizing the safety of her country by engaging in sinful liaisons with an American high schooler. This will undermine her already shaky base, infuriate her subjects, and erode Costa Luna into a mere shell of the country it once was.’ End quote.” the reporter looked up, microphone edging towards Rosalinda. “Do you have a response to that?”
Rosalinda’s smile was fighting to crumble, but she refused to give in.
“Perhaps you may conduct a more extensive interview with Senor Kane and ask him about the policies he’s enforced in Costa Estrella and how well they’ve kept his people happy over the years. He has twenty-five years of free time to tell you all about them.”
The crowd laughed again.
“Princesa – I mean, your highness …”
Rosalinda pivoted on the spot. “Yes, Mr. Elegante?”
The royal designer glanced up and down the hallway before looking the young queen in the eye. “I would just like to inform you that … I believe that what you intend to say today at the press conference is the bravest thing you have ever done. Many people will be hateful, but they are not your true friends, or worthy of your thoughts. You are, and always have been, a good, kind, generous person, and I am proud to call you my queen.”
Rosalinda felt tears pricking at her eyelids. “Mr. Elegante …” she’d always suspected that there was a reason Mr. Elegante never mentioned a girlfriend or wife, but decorum prevented her from bringing it up in conversation.
Mr. Elegante smiled, then tweaked her sleeve. “Perfecto, princesa.”
Rosalinda stood, and every sitting person in the room hurriedly leapt to their feet as well.
“As much as I would love to tell you all about my love for Ms. Mason, I have several matters of state to attend to this afternoon. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen of the press.” Rosalinda inclined her head ever so slightly, inwardly smirking as the assembled reporters bowed and curtsied in return, and swept from the room.
Little did the people who’d spent the last quarter of an hour grilling her about her personal life know, Carter had literally flown in last night. Rosalinda had been unfamiliar with the term ‘moral support’ until Carter had elaborated: “Just because you’re not a princess anymore doesn’t mean you don’t need rescuing now and again.”
Beaming to herself, and remembering that she was wearing the lacy pink underwear that infuriated Carter to no end, Queen Rosalinda Maria Montoya Fioré headed upstairs to her room, where her girlfriend was waiting for her.
Re: ♥
Date: 2010-11-07 08:55 pm (UTC)How on earth did you find this? I'd forgotten all about it myself!
First of all, DUDE YES, PPP has SO FREAKING MUCH LESBIANY SUBTEXT
I kept thinking "It's a Disney movie, they're not going to kiss ... WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO KISS GORRAMIT?!?!?!?" because with a little tweaking PPP would have made for a luverly little 'lesbian coming of age' flick.
They were all so perfectly in character.
ThankyouthankyouTHANKYOU. I was so worried about that!
And I loved that you addressed the whole issue of what would happen if happens when Carter and Rosie get together.
I wanted to make it fun for myself, and taking place after the movie seemed to be the best bet.
You handleded everything so perfect. And the cuteness yet total HOTNESS of the carter/rosie lfash back scenes was just awesome and... ugh. brilliant! ♥
Thank you so very much for your lovely comment. This really cheered me up, especially since I've been too busy to write and post fic for a long time. *glomps you*
