Go watch it. Now. Please.
It's this very strange show ... six episodes, starring David Tennant (the only reason I started to watch it) with his natural accent (and what a damn fine accent it is ...)
The premise of the show is kinda hard to explain. It's about this guy, Ripley Holden, in this town called Blackpool (in England) and he's planning to open a Casino thing, he's got a sort of slot-machine place set up, but after opening night this guy turns up dead in the arcade. Ripley's family is very messed up indeed, as is he. David Tennant shows up to investigate the death, being all sexy in this wonderful long coat, eating everything in sight (INCLUDING ICE CREAM!), and eventually has an afair with Ripley's wife.
Here's the thing, though. Randomly, they all burst into song and dance.
Well, technically they lip-synch and dance about wonderfully, but sometimes you can hear their voices behind the song. It's very odd indeed, but I loved it.
Yeah, there's a lot of foul-language, and quite a lot of sex, but as the scene where Ripley's wife Natalie and David Tennant get it on, they're SINGING, I didn't mind it all that much.
That scene, plus the closing number of episode 1, where David Tennant and Ripley half-tango to 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin' (which is FANTASTIC, and I'm not saying that just because DT gets down on his knees twice ... no no, not all! I'm just a sucker for tango-scenes!)
Also, did I mention the bit in episode 5 where Ripley and DT dunk each other underwater WHILST SINGING?! I have no bloody idea what that was all about, but it was GLORIOUS ...
Yeah, so, just thought I'd put that out there. I hadn't heard of Blackpool before, and I'm very glad I did.

Date: 2008-06-07 09:54 pm (UTC)I admit it. I watched the scene for "These Boots Are Made For Walking" like, 15 times. :D It's no sin.

Date: 2008-06-07 11:19 pm (UTC)DT's real voice is just ... GUH. How does that man WALK DOWN THE STREET without being jumped? For srs, with that hair and that voice and seeing how famous he is ... *sighs* I'm surprised he hasn't been kidnapped ...
I haven't watched the semi-tango-scene THAT much, but I've certainly watched it quite a bit.
I wouldn't care even if it WAS a sin! Besides, DT on his knees always makes me think of the Master ... which reminds me, as soon as I've finished with Casanova and Reaper, back to LoM! *dashes off looking determined*

Hahaha. I love Life On Mars. I'm almost done with it... It's really fantastic, and I'm not really even that big on cop shows.
The internet = the best place to watch TV.

Date: 2008-06-07 11:16 pm (UTC)Blackpool was ... wonderful. And yeah, his actual voice makes me MELT. That and the semi-tango-scene. And the bit where he and Natalie sing and shag. AND the bit where he EATS ICE CREAM. And the bit where he gets all wet, and ... yeah, I loved everything he did in that, really.

Date: 2008-06-07 11:29 pm (UTC)'These Boots Are Made For Walkin'' was the best scene in that series (though I may be biased for its slashyness - I kept imagining the Master in Holden's place). I've rewatched it a little too much on youtube for my own good.
And David Tennent has a little too much of an oral fixatation, not that I'm complaining. ^_^

You too, eh? Tee hee ... when they startetd I thought 'oh my GOD, we need the Master in there instead!' but those two did very well with each other.

Me too ... I think everyone who's seen the show and loves slash has ... *drools*
And David Tennent has a little too much of an oral fixatation, not that I'm complaining. ^_^
I know, REALLY! What is WITH THAT MAN?! (With that, his HAIR, his VOICE, and the fact that he's insanely famous, I'm shocked he hasn't been kidnapped by raving fangirls and tied up in some apartment by now, kind of like on that Friday Night prank ...) I'm not complaining either ... whoever gave him that ice cream should be given a MEDAL ... much like whoever decided Sylar should eat ice cream ...

Date: 2008-06-19 12:58 am (UTC)You know what? I can't watch David Tennant having any sort of...physical intimacy. I just can't. I got embarrassed and had to look away and I'm not sure why since I find him to be a total babe. I have some sort of mental block toward that I guess... But the show was realllllly good.

Date: 2008-06-08 02:50 am (UTC)I loved most of it - even though sex scenes kind of bore me so I spent quite a lot of it patiently waiting for the plot to start again - but the ending felt a little contrived to me, like the characters had to jump through quite a few hoops in order for the story to finish the way it did. Otherwise, it was pretty awesome.
What was your favourite song? I think mine was The Boy with the Thorn in His Side. (David Tennant, human metronome!)

Date: 2008-06-08 05:06 pm (UTC)I didn't like all the sex, but David Tennatn SINGING and getting it on ... well, that's not something you see every day now, is it?
The ending was a bit odd, but to me it felt almost like the ending of an independent film. Ya know, things work out, but not always a happy ending? If that makes ANY sense ... still love that DT and Natalie got together, no matter what ...
Hrrrrrrm ... I loved the big numbers, such as The Boy with the Thorn in His Side (DT's dancing was HILARIOUS) and the one with all the people in the yellow hats, and the opening to episode 2, 'The Gambler' where we go around to everyone and DT eats ice cream and sings, bobbing his head ... but my favorite out all of them would have to be 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin.' Tango-scenes always get me. ALWAYS. Especially when there's slashy undertones.

Date: 2008-06-09 01:28 am (UTC)No, it isn't. ^.^
See, my problem with the ending was that it was too happy. I would have liked to see Carlisle and Natalie not getting together, because it was more realistic and the show had been going in that direction. But in the end, a fair few characters - Carlisle included - changed in ways that I think were a little unrealistic, just so that we could get our Carlisle/Natalie happy ending. The only thing about which I was pleased was that Danny got away with the crime, but even that was unrealistic - I was only happy about that because I liked Danny.
Did you see the bit in The Boy with the Thorn in His Side where DT messes up the dancing a little? Kills me dead every time. But yeah, I loved These Boots are Made for Walkin' as well. (Slashy undertones is right! ^.^)

Date: 2008-06-08 05:10 pm (UTC)David Morrissey is icky. He had too many sex scenes, and I kept thinking 'No, Natalie! You've got DAVID TENNANT there, go shag him!' but David Morrissey was great in that. Especially the semi-tango scene. MADE OF WIN. (Yeah, I didn't think there was anyone taller than DT! *shivers*
I love how you can hear him singing behind the actual song. Makes it feel much better than if they were simply lipsynching, ya know?
VERY fun stuff!

Date: 2008-06-08 05:12 pm (UTC)I dunno ... it COULD work as a LoM crossover ... would you be using the premise that Sam is the Master, and becomes the Master again, and, in revenge, sends the Doctor back in time, but something goes wrong and the Doctor ends up as DI Peter Carlisle?
