Why are they all speaking English in the future? Are they actually all speaking Esperanto in the future due to different space stations merging? Shouldn’t they be speaking a mixture of English, Russian, and Mandarin? What will the ground dwellers speak? Will they speak a more evolved form of language, whereas the spaceship people will speak a more archaic version, having been isolated for so long and watched the same tv shows over and over again for a hundred years?
Don’t mind me, I’m just sad we’re not getting more future slang. D:
So, despite the vastly different settings, I’m getting some Snowpiercer vibes with this show. Which is a good thing.
.
.
I’m really annoyed that they killed Wells. Because there’s no good reason for that other than “someone needed to die … the black guy is expendable.” And depending on how this show was greenlit, whether they shot the pilot first, shopped it around, and then wrote the rest of season 1, or what, they might not have decided to kill him off until the role had been cast and the pilot had been shot. So I am gonna call it like I see it, and hope it was just a really bad mistake on their part. But like, all the bad things I’ve heard about this show have been its issues with PoC characters. And I can really see how that’s going to keep being a problem in the future.
Seriously there’s so much more that could have been done with Wells as a character. His loyalty conflicts with his father. His willingness to do anything, even let Blondie hate him for years, to preserve her relationship with her mother. Hell, his relationship to the Mom, the Mom knows what she did and knows what he did, and let Blondie keep thinking that, there’s potential for conflict there. Wells letting go of his morals and strictness and possibly rising up as a leader. Wells becoming a follower instead of a leader. Wells being used as a hostage whenever the space station sends people down, he is Space Obama’s son after all.
But I mean, it’s not like he coulda had a relationship with Blondie, despite years of friendship and closeness. No, that’s for a white guy she barely knows. She can fall into his arms. But a black guy? No, never! No potential there! Better kill Wells off once he’s served his purpose. Which was … um … telling Blondie the truth about her mom? I guess?
What a fucking waste. This is bad writing. I thought Goggles was gonna die, a sweet kid who wasn’t around for long, but his death would have made Asian Kid really sad and everyone else on the Away Team bond over the loss of their comrade. That would have been effective. But no, the black guy best friend who never so much as kissed the white girl protagonist, he had to die, because … someone needed to die. He was expendable, you see.
.
.
What IS effective and good writing is Blondie deciding to remove her wristband to make her mom think she’s dead, as revenge for her mom betraying her dad and sending him to execution. I like this moment, it’s very effective, I understand Blondie’s motivations entirely, it’s not a clumsy way to get her to remove her wristband, and seeing her mother’s grief is absolutely heartbreaking.
.
.
Then we have a scene of a white guy pissing on a black guy after calling him lazy.
… do the writers … have eyeballs? Eyeballs that can see?
Did no one think.
Like I can chalk this up to a casting problem but someone on set should have stopped and said “Hang on, wait, no, let’s … not do that.”
.
.
Welp, the kids jump to summary execution pretty quick.
Blondie, stupidly, doesn’t seem to have predicted this. I mean, honey, you call out a murderer in front of a bunch of people he’s been bullying for weeks, while everyone is paranoid, and BORED, they’re gonna start demanding blood. It’s how humans work.
Like seriously, our “heroes” need to stop being such Ned Starks and understand that while THEY THEMSELVES are good noble people who would never do a bad thing, NOT EVERYONE ELSE operates like that.
Bellend makes the good point that this lynching is on Blondie, because she should have kept her mouth shut. Which, yeah, she should have. Just because he’s a creep doesn’t mean he’s not right a lot of the time.
WHOA. Then Rue admits her guilt! This … will end badly.
I’m amazed the Mad Max Kid didn’t die. I mean it was a short-drop hanging but still, he was so close to dying. Not a whole lot of people actually die on this show that’s clearly using The Hunger Games imagery to springboard itself into fame and fortune.

Oh, wow, Surrogate Daughter isn’t down for trading sex for the stuff she needs. But I cannot imagine that is not commonplace in this economy. Really, her concern should be 1) STIs and 2) unwanted pregnancy. Because both of those things seem to be very dangerous on this medical-rationing ship.
[Edit: in hindsight I should have predicted this was foreshadowing. See, she is presented with a test of her relationship and she stays loyal and does not “cheat” (pay sexual favors for the ability to go save her boyfriend and humanity) but Shaggy Hair by the end of the episode has “cheated” on his girlfriend (whom he has not seen in some time and whom he has no reason to believe will see again, and whom he has good reason to think will assume he is dead now) so oooooooo drama! And I can guarantee that when Shaggy Hair cheated people thought it was romantic or hot or whatever, but if Raven had cheated, people woulda been calling her every foul name in the dictionary.]
.

Nigel, whom I am referring to by name because I love her instantly, is smart. She’s playing both sides and I appreciate that. I hope she sticks around. Good to see a WoC in a position of power on a sci-fi show that isn’t a “mystical priestess” role. I mean, she’s a snarky criminal who pimps people out and calls Raven’s mommy a whore to get a rise out of her, but I am taking what I can get here.
Also Backstabby Asshole has a religious mom he’s embarrassed about.
.
.
You know, I’m fine with them hunting Rue down. She stabbed a guy to death and lied about it for days. She could do that to anyone. I don’t blame them for being scared.
.
.
Oh gods. Mom must stay and Surrogate Daughter must go, alone. I predicted this, I’m glad Mom is staying, but Mom had better not die or I am quitting this show. She is the emotional center of this show for me.
I just feel so bad for her, she might have lost her daughter today and now she’s loosing her Surrogate Daughter. Instead of going to the ground on a desperate mission, she’s staying, probably going to be sentenced to death again.
I cannot hammer home how much I care about Mom, and how angry I will be if she dies.
.
.
And then Rue throws herself off a cliff so we don’t have to watch teenagers gang up on and murder a 12 year old.
I … don’t know how I feel about this, story-wise. Seems like a hasty ending to a potentially deep and complex morality plot.
Blondie stops being Ned Stark, but not by much. I mean, banishing Mad Max Guy? He’s not gonna live long. You’re just sentencing him to a prolonged death by starvation or something. Just slit his throat and have done with it, honey.
.
.
Goddammit, now ALL the screens are dark. Now everyone on Station Management is gonna think they’re all dead, and kill the Mom.
Seriously who designed this thing? Who didn’t install primitive radios or SOMETHING on the ship. It’d be pretty important to communicate with them down there, yeah? This is stupid.
.
.
I’m gonna ship Snarky Girl/Goggles/Asian Kid and ya’ll can’t stop me.
.
.
Oh, great, Shaggy Hair, in a moment of emotional distress, has sex with Blondie. Just as his girlfriend is speeding down the Earth in an escape pod. Because ooooooooo, drama love-triangle.
I do not give one single fuck.
I believe I am missing the point of this show.
