So, I decided to watch the first episode of Hustle after a long day's work, before a long day of theater, at 2 am, because my brain checks out under those conditions.

First thoughts? Oh hai, Mr. Teatime! (Alternatively: Oh hai, Elton from 'Love and Monsters!' Oh hai, Supervacuo from The Revenger's Tragedy! ... yeah, I'm probably the only one who'd use that movie as a reference, shut up, it's awesome and it's got the Ninth Doctor in it and Sir Derek Jacobi and he makes car noises for some reason and yeah, moving on ...)

Also, that scene where they make him think that Mickey got shot and the police got everybody? My reaction was like this: "ahahahahaha ... that's so fucked up!" I mean seriously, it kinda reminded me of what V does to Evie in V for Vendetta. But not as fucked up and disturbing as that, obviously.

Did I mention that my brain checks out around this time of night/morning?

Seriously, though, love the show. You could call it "British Leverage" but it's not, really (for reasons other than, y'know, Hustle came first.) The premise is similar but the approaches are different. Hustle seems to be poking fun at itself more, what with breaking the fourth wall so much, and they're a lot swankier than Leverage. Then again, I've only seen the pilot, it could change. But in my mind I'm comparing the two shows's pilots. In Leverage's pilot a group of very different but distinct criminals are thrown together under the leadership of a Fallen Hero with a Tragic Past that has Driven Him to Drink, and there are explosions n'shit and they get Revenge against a jerk who tried to screw them over and get him arrested in an embarrassing fashion. In Hustle's pilot a bunch of swanky, confident people who all know each other already con a rich lech ... because ... and make the police look like idiots, and psychologically haze and smack around the new member of their group.

Actually, now that my brain is working a little more and it's nearing 3 am, I'm starting to realize that Hustle doesn't exactly measure up against Leverage. I enjoyed watching the pilot episode of Hustle. I liked the humor and the eye candy and the way it was all set up, both film-wise and con-wise, and the characters endeared themselves to me in a variety of subtle and well acted ways.
Unless something drastic happens, however, I don't see it winning me over like Leverage has.

Come to think of it, Leverage's third season is on Netflix now ... I should get to that ...
