I really enjoyed this movie. REALLY enjoyed it! I laughed a lot, I wibbled, I gasped, and I was impressed and delighted with the first fight between Megamind and Titan, with Megamind sneaking around the grid system in his giant mecha suit. HILARIOUS.
The music was BADASS. Megamind had me from the three-minute mark. Also, practically-canon FoeYay? *SQUEEEEEEEEE* There's fics of Megamind/Roxy/Metroman, right? Because I ship that HARD now.
The tropes, the cliches, the nods to comic books ... it was simply fantastic. I'm a bit sad that there was the obligatory "and now he's a hero! Love redeems!" because I loved him as a campy supervillain, and once I got over the initial shock of "oh my god ... he just KILLED HIS NEMESIS!!!!!! THIS GOT A PG RATING?!??!?! WOW!" I was really enjoying his triumphant "took over the world" celebrations. (Painting the town red blue ... very clever.) But hey, what can you do, it's a Dreamworks kid's movie, at least we got a lot of fun with the villain before he turned all heroic on us.

This isn't to say that I think it's a superior film to Despicable Me. I think it's unreasonable to compare the two films, to be honest.
Despicable Me is about a Grinchy guy whose heart grows three sizes due to three adorable little orphan girls, along with some fantastic minions and a FREEZE RAY, and fights a bizarre cross between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.
Megamind is about a villain who wins, gets bored, dates his nemesis' girl, creates a new nemesis who goes EVUL, and becomes a hero in the end.
Two completely different stories. The only similarities are the villain protagonists, the fact that love redeems said protagonists, and one or two instances of mild similar imagery. I'm sure we could argue about this, but I haven't the time right now, seeing as tomorrow my great big project begins. Who knows, maybe after a while I'll declare one or the other 'the better film' ... but at the moment I don't think a comparison is possible or appropriate.

I look forward to adding Megamind to my DVD collection.
