Ok, first off, two things really stood out to me about this book:
1) Vetinari being completely and utterly awesome (and DRUNK! *cannot stop laughing*) and him and Lady Margolotta being all 'mind games now ... sex later? Yessss ...' and talking about their other sexytime partners servants, and BAHAHAHAHA Drumknott getting a lady to dress up as a manilla envelope!!!!!
2) THIS:
Ridcully (about Straight Gay Professor Macarona) "A lot of that sort of thing about, apparently … people make such a fuss. Anyway, in my opinion, there's not enough love in the world."
Subverting Hide Your Gays in the best possible way. THANK YOU, Pterry, you did what JK Rowling never had the guts to do.
*tears up*
That reminded me of a little line in one of the Protector of the Small books, where the main character Kel is confused as to why a guy started a fight after someone suggested he was gay, seeing as on the Yamani Isles (where she mostly grew up) "some men prefer other men, some women prefer other women," and seeing as that's just how people are she doesn't understand why that's an insulting implication. Reading that in elementary school was ... really important, because while I knew my dad and his friends were great, I had to put up with a lot of flack from my classmates about gayness. Finding out that Tamora Pierce was on my side was very helpful.
Even though I don't have to contend with stupid gradeschoolers anymore, it's nice to know that another of my favorite authors is like Tamora Pierce.
On the whole, I loved this book. (It's Discworld, how could I not?) It might not end up being one of my favorites, but I enjoyed the read and there were a lot of laugh-out-loud moments and the story was intriguing. Glenda is how I would be if I were bossier, and I can really sympathize with her mother-hen attitude towards Juliet. I think a lot of us have had that dopey-but-sweet friend who seems to be years younger than us, who we feel we have to take care of.
POOR NUTT!!!!! *GLOMPS HIM* (Never expected the Orc thing. I mean, I knew he couldn't have been a goblin, because it was being built up as a big shock and they'd been calling him a goblin ... I always thought orcs were kinda like big orge types with tusk-teeth and you can play a half-orc in D&D and I always thought the lady orcs were kinda pretty ... but in Discworld they're more like goblin-esque people? *scratches head*)
I am so glad Glenda stared down Lady Margolotta, she deserved to be taken down a peg forinsulting my city all that stuff with Nutt.
Speaking of that, Glenda's attitude towards the Patrician and her dealings with him were HILARIOUS. We've seen Vetinari from the eyes of powerful men, from the eyes of coppers and assassins and wizards and even a dog, but this is the first time we've (well, the first time I'VE seen, I haven't read all the books yet) seen him through the eyes of a young citizen who won't stand for any nonsense.
Trev Likely was a great character too. That's what I adore about Sir Terry, he writes EVERYONE so very well. Little kids (the Hogfather) teenagers (Unseen Academicals, the Tiffany books) young men, middle-aged men (the Watch) old men, and badass ladies (all the books.) I especially love it when he writes young women, because he doesn't make them paragons of feminist ideals, he makes them REAL PEOPLE.
Oh, but I was talking about Trev, wasn't I? Yeah, Trev is awesome. Trying his best, struggling along and ending up on top and having a nice little character arc and getting with a hot girl to boot. Hurray!
Speaking of hot girls, DWARF FASHION. WIN! Were Madam Sharn and Pepe gay, straight, was ze trans? I don't care, they were perfect and in love and some kind of message about tolerance, one way or the other.
Also, Pepe being a complete badass and taking out Andy the Asshole and GIVING HIM A LEMON ... fuck yeah. Don't mess with the Camp Gay Fashionista, dude, he will FUCK YOU UP.
The coach ride was made of awesome from beginning to end. Attempting to threaten the driver with a lead pipe "I'll raise you this battle-axe" and the lady with the macaroons (my new favorite character) and them attacking the Little Sisters and telling Nutt he has Worth and Nutt being a blacksmith ... WIN. Loved that whole sequence.
Professor Hix is a joy. I want to give him a hug and go to his theater productions and dress up in the sexy lady necromancer outfit for him. (Is that weird? Yes, it's weird ... but Professor Hix was awesome. It's part of his JOB to say slightly-evil things, but he's not, in fact, horribly evil. My kind of man, right there ... OH GOD I MISS MY BOYPERSON SO MUCH!!!! WHEN IS HE COMING BACK FROM CALIFORNIA AGAIN!??!?!?!?!)
I'm sure there's more I'm missing. If there's something you particularly enjoyed (or didn't enjoy) that I missed in my ramblings, please mention it int he comments and I'll try to give you my thoughts on it.
And now I have to go do work for my HUGE PROJECT.And listen to the MoF Discworld episode.

Seriously, Terry Pratchett...is a brave, brave man. :)
