... wow.
I mean ... WOW. I knew it was good, I think I even watched Linkara and his brother's Vlog about it last summer, but ... WOW.
That was utterly fantastic. I even teared up during the last scene, on that last line.
I absolutely adored the use of flashbacks in this. I LOVE flashbacks of any kind (I blame Joss Whedon, personally.) Most of my favorite Buffy and Angel episodes are flashback-centric.
Gotham is, as always, a gorgeous, dark, atmospheric noir playground. It's my favorite city in fiction, surpassed only by Ankh-Morpork, and that is saying a lot.
Was it just me, or was that double-katana lady on the assassin team really, really sexy?
Random Lady Aide to Black Mask was nice. So unfazed by the craziness going on around her, and her boss beating on the poor Red Shirts.
Ok, I do have one nitpick, and while it's entirely due to personal bias, it's a rather big nitpick.
Nitpick: the Joker's voice. No. Just ... no. It's not that the actor was bad, he was quite good, actually, but when you're making a movie for geeks and you cast the guy we're all gonna associate with a) Dr. Drakken b) Bender or c) Fu Dog (from American Dragon: Jake Long ... ok, maybe it's just me who makes that association *blushes*) and you cast that voice as THE JOKER ... it won't work. It took me most of the movie to push that 'buwha?' reaction out of my brain so I could take this character seriously (meaning seriously as a credible threat. I swear to Athena, if anyone comments 'why so serious?' I will punch a chicken) and considering he spends the first scene brutally MURDERING a TEENAGE BOY with a CROWBAR (my god ... *shudders*) that says a lot. John DiMaggio is a great voice actor, I am not denying that, but he was miscast in my personal opinion.
Neil Patrick Harris, however, was not. I loved Nightwing the minute he showed up, and this is from someone who has only a passing knowledge of the DC universe. (Like, I could probably tell you all the Robins in order, if not by name certainly by what happened to them, and I know a handful of Batman's Rouge's Gallery and their stories, but ask me about anything else DC and I'm not going to do so well. I'm trying to get into mainstream comics, really I am, I just don't have TIME right now, all I have time for is Batman, because I know the most about Batman and he's got the best villains.)
The writing was excellent. In my mind, they're not doing their job If the Joker doesn't both horrify AND make me honestly laugh. I was disgusted by AND amused by the Joker in this. He does dreadful, dreadful things, but I can't help but giggle at his comments.Especially the FoeYaylicious ones. Good god, writers, thank you for reminding me why I ship it like burning.
In conclusion: go check this out if you haven't already. It's a nice way to spend a hour and forty-five minutes on a lazy Sunday.

"Oh, party pooper. No cake for you."
Just because...
Date: 2011-01-10 09:59 pm (UTC)-Frankly, I think I was more focused on the Batman/Red Hood than Batman/Joker. (I'm a sucker for the tragic villains. ;-) But John DiMaggio did an actually pretty excellent job. And it helped that the writing was so good that some of the Joker's comments could actually Cross The Line Twice. (Because he's the Joker, of course)
-Yep, NPH as Nightwing was awesome. :)
-One thing I found pretty cool is that the voice actress for Black Mask's assistant is played by Kelly Hu. (She played Visas Marr in one of my favorite Star Wars games, KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC II: THE SITH LORDS) So...yeah.

Re: Just because...
Date: 2011-01-11 11:10 pm (UTC)Ooooo! I should have spotted that!
Then again, I've got this strange aversion to mentor/apprentice relationships. Not that I wouldn't read fics about them if they were well written (and hey, Daine/Numair is canon and I'm just fine with it, but that's because they discuss the potential wrongness of the pairing in the books) but usually it's not my cup of tea. Interpreting Jason as having a twisted crush on Bruce, that I could totally buy, but Bruce feeling anything other than guilt and father-like responsibility ... no.
(I hope that didn't come off as mean or confrontational, I love to discuss things, but on the internet things can get interpreted differently and I don't want to upset you by accident.)
But John DiMaggio did an actually pretty excellent job.
Oh, he did, he did! I just personally couldn't get over the familiar sound of his voice.
And it helped that the writing was so good that some of the Joker's comments could actually Cross The Line Twice. (Because he's the Joker, of course)
The writing for the Joker was spectacular. If you're cringing and laughing, they're doing their job right.
-Yep, NPH as Nightwing was awesome. :)
NPH is awesome whatever he does. Voicing Nightwing just added to the coolness that was already there! *grinz*

Oi, come back here! I don't even know who you are yet! You can't just leave an awesome drive-by comment and sneak away!

"Interpreting Jason as having a twisted crush on Bruce, that I could totally buy, but Bruce feeling anything other than guilt and father-like responsibility ... no."
I see. Personally, that's kind of how I saw the Batman/Red Hood stuff. Especially his choice of words when cornering the Joker at gunpoint: "because *he* took me away from you." Something about that choice of words sounded...very charged, really.
And no, you didn't upset me. :)
But John DiMaggio did an actually pretty excellent job.

I think we've all had those experiences.
"The writing for the Joker was spectacular. If you're cringing and laughing, they're doing their job right."
I agree. It's definitely something along the lines of, "Oh my God, should I be laughing at this?" Mostly in the BATMAN ANIMATED SERIES, but there was some of it in THE DARK KNIGHT as well. *Cough* The Pencil Trick *Cough*. And the moment when the explosives fail to go off at the hospital. XD
Personally, I was laughing at the line about "the [picture] of me and [Jason] with the crowbar" (mostly reciting from memory; it's been way too long since I've seen the film), but considering what happened to Jason, it's also a Tearjerker.
(And yeah, the flashbacks were pretty poignant as well. I mean...for lack of a better word, *ouch*.)
"NPH is awesome whatever he does. Voicing Nightwing just added to the coolness that was already there! *grinz*"
I personally loved his banter with Batman. It speaks volumes about their partnership, really. :)
*Should really get around to watching DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG*
Again, thanks a bunch for your reply. It really made my day. :)

Oh yes! That whole scene with the tied-up!Joker and Bruce and Jason was ... wow.
And no, you didn't upset me. :)
Good, I've accidentally offended people in the past and it makes me feel twelve kinds of awful.

Yes indeed! The Dark Knight was RIFE with 'lol ... oh god, I should not laugh at that! ... tee hee ...' moments.
(And yeah, the flashbacks were pretty poignant as well. I mean...for lack of a better word, *ouch*.)
I'm a sucker for flashbacks of any kind in any medium, and these especially were used really well.
I personally loved his banter with Batman. It speaks volumes about their partnership, really. :)
That it did. I had only a vague sense of who Nightwing was, and those scenes were really nice for me to catch up with.
*Should really get around to watching DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG*
Yes, yes you should! *flails with geekery* SO AWESOME! BAD HORSE, BAD HORSE! FREEZE RAY! JOSS WHEDON AT HIS BEST! PRETTY PRETTY FELICIA DAY! NATHAN FILLION HAMMING IT UP!
Again, thanks a bunch for your reply. It really made my day. :)
Oh, you're most welcome! Can I ask how you came across my journal? (I can probably guess, I just like to hear how people stumble across my stuff.)
Re: Just because...
Date: 2011-01-13 09:39 pm (UTC)(Um...hope that didn't come out wrong. XD)
And maybe when I have the time, I'll definitely check out Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.
Just watched Dr. Horrible
Date: 2011-01-18 11:56 pm (UTC)Favorite bits:
-Captain Hammer's entrance. Milking the Giant Cow + Moving Van = Hilariously awesome.
-I can definitely see why they cast Neil Patrick Harris as the Music Meister. All I can say is...he has a really killer singing voice.
-Joss Whedon was definitely at his peak here. I adore FIREFLY, but I definitely have to say, *this* was even better. Especially the writing. I mean, you go from the Cringe Comedy of "Everyone's a Hero" (seriously, imagine being in that audience, watching Captain Hammer basically digging his own grave up on stage. XD) to the Nightmare Fuel with Dr. Horrible's entrance to...well, everything else. Holy mother of Mood Whiplash...
And Whedon does it *beautifully*.
-The beginning was pretty adorable. Which definitely makes what happens later even sadder. I swear, Joss Whedon is a sadist. Brilliant, but a sadist.
-And the...I don't really know their names, but the "Greek Chorus" guys that show up to basically read Bad Horse's letters...best One Scene Wonders *ever*.
Overall, 10/10. :)
Re: Just watched Dr. Horrible
Date: 2011-01-23 07:31 pm (UTC)Nathan Fillion is obviously having such fun with that part.

I know, right? *swoons* Why is he gay? *remembers my singing, geekalicious boyperson and goes running*
-Joss Whedon was definitely at his peak here. I adore FIREFLY, but I definitely have to say, *this* was even better.
Hmmmmm ... I'd find it hard to compare the two, I love them both for very different reasons and have problems with nitpicky things in both ... *ponders*

He so is. DAMN YOU ... WE WORSHIP YOU, JOSS!

Yeah, the Bad Horse Chorus ... I seriously want that ringtone. (Watching the thing is fantastic enough, but watching it with newbies and seeing their reaction to three cowboys randomly popping up onscreen and singing ... yeah, that's PRICELESS)

Depends, really. What sorts of nitpicky things? :)
He so is. DAMN YOU ... WE WORSHIP YOU, JOSS!
I know the feeling. I haven't watched FIREFLY in a long time -- I have no excuse. XD -- but I just remember being taken in by the characters, the *world*, the humor and emotion, the *plot* -- and then Fox had to be a bunch of dumbasses and cancel a really promising sci-fi show.
Although we did get a movie. :) And if Transmission Awesome is to be trusted, they're doing a sequel, of sorts, to the movie...

I want these guys to read whatever stuff I get in the mail. Seriously. I don't care what it is, I want these guys. XD
And I can definitely imagine the newbies' reactions to the Bad Horse Chorus. "Um...where did those cowboy guys come from?" XD
Re: Just watched Dr. Horrible
Date: 2011-01-23 10:03 pm (UTC)Well, Dr. Horrible is fantastic and all, but the ending is very upsetting and Penny wasn't much of a character, more like a reason for Billy to hate Captain Hammer (what, being bullied and beat up wasn't reason enough?)
But I can deal with that, I can push that thought under the rug in my brain and enjoy the hell out of the movie and sing the whole score with my boyperson.
Firefly ... I love everything about it, ok? But someday I'm gonna get a video camera and start doing reviews, and I'll do a whole series on Firefly, discussing whether people love it because it really is that good or because it's something Joss Whedon made that got cancelled before its time or something in between.
And if Transmission Awesome is to be trusted, they're doing a sequel, of sorts, to the movie.
alkdfjalkfjalsjfaslfjldasfjlaksfjalf??!?!???!?!?!?! Where did you hear this? When? *runs around and flailz*

Oh god, me too!

It's really funny if you watch it with people who are quiet and deadpan by nature. So they just sort of freeze and go 0.0 for a while and then say "uh ... what?" after my boyperson and I stopped belting "HE RIDES ACROSS THE NATION / THE THOROUGHBRED OF SIN!!!"

I think that's true. It's the kind of "boy likes girl who's -- kinda sorta? -- dating a jock guy". Kind of the darker version of the Snape/Lily/James love triangle in HARRY POTTER (okay, Dr. Horrible isn't a stalker, but...yeah. *Is thoroughly embarrassed now. XD*).
Firefly ... I love everything about it, ok? I think it's a little of both. Really, it's kind of the bizarre TV version of Too Good For This Sinful Earth/Too Cool To Live: it got cancelled way, *way* too soon. And FOX mostly cancelled it out of cowardice, not because it wasn't getting good slots. (And really, the bad slots were kind of *their* fault in the first place, with the anachronic order and all)
alkdfjalkfjalsjfaslfjldasfjlaksfjalf??!?!???!?!?!?! Where did you hear this? When? *runs around and flailz*
It was on the Nash episode of Transmission Awesome. I was mostly listening to it out of boredom, the usual wacky hijinks with RolloT and company, some lovely Deadpan Snarkiness from Nash, and then I heard something about Nash doing an interview with some guys doing an -- unofficial? -- Serenity sequel, to which I was like, "You've got to be kidding me!" (In a good way)
*Crosses fingers that Nash wasn't teasing us*
