Wow. I mean ... wow. Is it weird that I really actually loved this movie?
No, no it isn't. That was a really good movie. Not perfect, but not awful. Once you get over the weirdness factor of Rachel Dawes being a submissive and kinda dating Daniel Faraday, the movie sucks you right in. I've never watched such a silent movie; the awkwardness of the silences and verbal exchanges worked really well. While some of Mr. Grey's actions made me uncomfortable - leaving Lee there for THREE DAYS, that is not safe behavior at all! Bad dom, bad! - that makes sense, as he was still struggling with his need for a D/s relationship. And he really did care about Lee. One of my favorite scenes was the one where he asked her why she was cutting herself, ordered her to stop, and then ordered her to walk home. There was so much power in that scene, both the characters were just perfect and ... UNF *having trouble articulating myself because the film was just that good*
I thought it was nice how the relationship made Lee grow and gain self-confidence, and how it was Mr. Grey, not her, who was having trouble coming to terms with the whole thing. Having a dom who wasn't all 'rawr, I am a sexy, smooth predator and you will bow before me, slave' but rather 'do this, do that ... oh god, what am I doing I don't deserve this I'm sick ... do that again' was really interesting to see on-screen and I think James Spader did a really fantastic job of it.
All in all, a really good movie that I highly recommend to open-minded people (not so much to people unfamiliar with BDSM, D/s, and the like.)
(Heh heh, I had a whole list of things to do today. Know what definitely wasn't on it? "Watch Secretary." I don't mind, though. Great movie!)

Date: 2010-09-19 08:33 pm (UTC)On a more superficial note, I find the relationship between Lee and Mr. Grey to be insanely hot. Their chemistry...every time this movie is on tv, I actually stop to watch it.
