Oz (What aunt_zelda Thinks: the Pilot)
Sep. 7th, 2008 04:51 pm... wow.
Uh ... should I be watching this? Like with all the other HBO shows I've watched (ok, I admit, not many, but still) whilst watching, you get the feeling that you shouldn't be there. Fly-on-the-wall in the REAL world, ya know? There's sex where people aren't covered up by convieniently-placed blankets, and senseless violence, and uncensored swearing. It's too ... believable, ya know? The fights are graceful or pretty, they're hard and bloody and make you want to flinch. It's like there are no stuntdoubles or coreography, just angry, angry men going at it with no slashy potential.
Ok, you guys probably don't know, so I'll just say a few things that might be funny but are probably lame and won't earn me any spirit-lifting comments, but I ought to type it up all the same.
1: TWO actors who will later star on Lost?! So jarring. The first thing we see (after the theme song/credits) is the camera being confronted by a younger-looking, dreadlocked, wheel-chair-bound Michael. Later on our gateway-character is semi-accosted by Mr. Eko, who's wearing a very stupid hat.
2: I know that what's-his-name who later looses his glasses was a drunk who accidentally killed a little girl in broad daylight but ... nobody deserves to be butt-raped by a Nazi. Aren't Nazis supposed to be REALLY homophobic? What gives, Mr. Skinhead?
3: Yes, canon slash, but it's confuzzling canon slash. It's almost impossible for me to distinguish between the guys who are genuinely gay or bi, the guys who just want somewhere to put it and pretend the guy's a girl, and the guys who just get a kick out of humiliating other guys. *head hurts*
4: Whoever thought up the idea to do a Prison drama and make all these little allusions to The Wizard of Oz during it ... what the frak? Was the creator on drugs? I mean, it's a cool idea and all, kinda funny in a twisted way (Mr. Glynn, for example, which is funny because I started watchin Pushing Daisies and kept squeeing "OMG GALINDA!") but still ... what the hell? Randomness to the point of insanity ... I kinda like it. Which is probably why, despite it not being my kind of show (no vampires, no flying people, no aliens, no quirky detectives) I'm going to keep watching.
5: I love the different guilds. Yes, I'm using D&D terms, but it applies, and it's very interesting to watch, despite all the racism, homophobia, and ... reliegeous persecucion? That the right word? Those dudes should know not to mess with Muslims, really. Don't mess with their knit-caps, they'll come back and strangle you with their kickass beads.
6: You gotta respect a show that introduces a bunch of characters, follows the story of one ... and kills him by the end of the first gorram episode. And he was PRETTY, too!
P.S. I hear Eric Roberts shows up later on as a serial-killer? Could that role have been cast ANY more apropriately?!

Inmate #XVII: Honey, I made you a new shank!
Inmate #XV223: Darling! Let's make forbidden love on your bunk after lights out!
... or ... maybe that IS what's gonna happen. *shrugs*

Pushing Daisies and House takes priority over Oz. Oz takes priority over Smallville. (Season 1 of Smallville is kinda ... slow and annoying. Except for the Clark/Lex because HOO BABY ...)
HEROES HEROES HEROES! I announced today that it's two weeks until the day ... people sort of grunted in response.

It's good drama but scary as hell to watch XD

I'll watch a few more episodes before I pass 'no way in hell' or 'hmmm, good' or 'YAY I LOVE THIS.'
