How is it, that a show EONS better than Lost, managed to have a finale that reduces me to 'buwuh?' just like all of Lost's finales have?
Sam wakes up from his coma, and I whimper that he should stay in the fake-world and save Annie and Ray and Chris and Gene. He wakes up, though, and goes through life, recording some voiceovers (he ought to have written a book, or contacted Torchwood, or something) and eventually leaps off of a building to the show's signature song. (There are so many great things about LoM, one of them is the music.) He wakes up where he 'left off' and saves the gang. No one dies. No rocks fall. They end up in the pub. Everyone makes ammends. Sam and Annie meet on the street outside and kiss. It is cute and epic and makes me go 'awwwwww!' which, these days, for a straight couple, is very hard to do. Gene drives up (after being shot in the leg, mind you) and the gang piles into Gene's Awesome Car and drive off into the distance to the signature song. The Rani Ushas Creepy Girl runs up behind a group of kids and breaks the fourth wall, switching 'us' off.
I do not feel cheated.
I do not feel angry.
I feel a healthy, confuzzled mixture of happiness and depression, kinda like how you feel after watching an independant movie.
Let's get one thing clear though: because Sam created such an elaborate and detailed and believable world, I think he deserves to stay there. He may be selfish, but given the choice, I think we'd all, deep down, choose the dream over reality. It's kinda scary.
Still, I certainly didn't expect that ending AT ALL. Which makes the show even more fantastic, something I hadn't thought possible.
Now, if we Americans could only OBTAIN the episodes (legally) over here, that would be nice. *glares at the BBC* Come on, guys, I hear 'Ashes to Ashes' sucked ...
One last note: I feel the need to point out that the 'real world' is lit coldly, with a sort of blue sheen, whereas 'Sam's World' is lit all gold and there are brighter colors and such. Granted, most of said bright colors are on Nelson, but that's another discussion post.
(P.S. Israel Kamakawiwo Ole's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow FTW!)

Date: 2008-08-20 07:40 pm (UTC)Yeah, I'm kinda annoyed that Sam didn't inquire about that psycho-kidnapping-girls-and-strangling-them-with-bootlaces case he'd been working on when he got hit by the car, and 'fixed' in his head, or found Maya, or asked his mom about his dad, or ... *shrugs* it's really too bad, but I didn't get the feeling I got when I read the ending of HP7, so they did SOMETHING right ...
I did read somewhere that they filmed an alternate ending where Sam falls to his death when he dives off that roof, but they decided it was too bleak to use. Of course, that's an internet rumor, so take it with a salt shaker full of salt, but it would've been more believable to me.
I think they DID ... maybe I should look that one up ... sounds a bit too ... terrible, actually.
Nonetheless, LoM was a fantastic series and John Simm is amazing in it.
*nodnod* John Simm is FANTASTIC. He'd better be coming back as the Master for a special next year ... *crosses fingers*
