 GREAT movie!

... but was it a Captain America movie?

The good: everyone’s performances, all the banter, ALL THE FIGHT SCENES OMG, T’Challa T’Challa T’Challa T’Challa omg omg omg omg omg omg he was so great I can’t wait for his movie omg omg omg, Wanda’s mini arc of dealing with her own fear and people being afraid of her, Vision’s comedy and introspection, the hallway scene with the mother and Tony, the balancing of everyone having something to do at multiple times, the limited appearance of Spiderman, the handling of the main villain.

The not so good: More like an Avengers 2.5 film or a fourth Iron Man movie at times, not nearly enough Bucky and Steve scenes, not nearly enough Sam and Steve scenes, General Ross is so obviously evil that his side is kinda in the wrong no matter what, random Steve/Sharon kiss that had very little build up, not enough Sharon, not enough Natasha, highly questionable handling of Rhodey, unresolved plot details that kind got tossed aside so Tony’s pain could take a front seat again for the sixth time, just because you crack jokes about how young Aunt May is doesn’t make it ok that you cast a young woman in a role traditionally reserved for older female actors in Hollywood - roles that are not exactly falling off trees right now.

Overall I really enjoyed this movie. Black Panther was handled extremely well, the fight scenes were incredible, the humor was good, there were many poignant moments, I never lost track of what was happening or how people related to each other. But ultimately I feel that while I got a great Avengers movie, I didn’t get the Captain America movie I was promised, promised repeatedly by the creators and marketers. Large chunks of this movie were all about Tony. Too many important moments happened when Steve was nowhere around. Not enough resolution happened with Bucky (wtf happened to that codebook? It was super important and then vanished.) Natasha was not used nearly enough, she was used far better than she was used in Ultron of course but that’s not really saying much. I am so fucking sick of Spiderman, and how studios will move hell and high water for a new Spiderman movie but not for movies lead by women and/or people of color. (Is there a single major woman of color in the MCU?)

Ultimately, I enjoyed this movie. It’s great. It’s good. It’s got a lot going for it.

But it was not entirely what I wanted, nor what was promised. I’m not angry, I’m just a little disappointed is all.
