SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There's so many little details I missed on the first viewing, because the first time my eyes were trying to drink in EVERYTHING OMG SO MUCH GOING ON OH GOD OH GOD, whereas the second time around I could relax a bit and let my eyes wander more selectively and look for little things. The first time we see Newt and Hermann in the background on the deck, Tendo's neck tattoo, Sasha's gestures, the bellows on Newt's kaiju-drifting-machine, the way Mako "sheaths" her stick during the fight as if she's been using a sword (if you know about her backstory her family made swords, hence of course she treats the weapon like a sword out of habit.) Also, how Newt runs for the shelter in the crowd, gets knocked aside, turns and seeing the Kaiju attacking, and starts shoving people aside and yelping "I'm a doctor! I'm a doctor!" in the hopes that he'll be let to the front. First I was like "wow what a dick" then I was like "no, that is so how people would react in that situation, good or bad, petty or generous. A giant monster is attacking and you might not make it to shelter. You would say you were the goddamn Queen of England if you thought it'd get you through."
Just ... wow. And I cried so much. Several times, because I knew who was gonna die heroically and what was coming. I BAWLED over Mako's scene. It was so scary and intense, even though I'd seen it before. I think the first viewing I was more in shock, though I did cry a bit then. Today, today I wept so much. I clung to my dad's arm and sobbed.
Incidentally, this is a good father/daughter movie, in my opinion.
I wanted so hard to cheer and punch the air during the action scenes. The triumphant heroic theme music made my heart swell, it was so wonderful. The kaiju are so gross and gorgeous and nasty and scary and cool.
So ... yeah. Awesome awesome movie. Made me wanna write even more fanfics. So glad I saw it a second time. Might see it a third time, depending on money and time.
