Ok, yes, finally. I couldn't wait until the summer. I should wait, but I couldn't. Tumblr has been showing me gifs and teasing about all kinds of intriguing wonderful things like awesome female characters and spanking and stuff.
So ... yeah. I finally caved.

I am still annoyed that Watson is not a veteran in this canon. I like the whole "former surgeon" thing, when I first heard about it I thought it was one of those "emotional woman had to leave her epic high paying high status job because of her women's emotions" bullshit things ... but it's not. Joan is a wonderful character and I immediately loved her right from episode one. Sometimes I just take to characters like that. Joan is one such character.
I'm annoyed she's not a veteran but I'm not angry anymore. This show is going at things from a different angle, and making Watson a former doctor and a former soldier would have added a lot more when the idea of the show is building the relationship between these two characters and slowly finding out about their pasts, not packing them full of epic backstories that we have to spend ages unpacking before they can have any kind of relationship on the show. If that makes any sense? It does in my brain, I'm not sure it does in the type.

Also ... Holmes. Ok. Nothing new here yet, as I've only just started episode 3 (whose description made me go "oh FUCK NO" and almost stop, gee thanks, Elementary just what I needed, a fucking reminder I hail from the land of Stephen King) ... but that's not a bad thing. I think he'd be a nicer person to hang out with than BBC Sherlock, as he seems a lot more pleasant. Still a bit of a dick, still socially inept/not giving a fuck about social niceties, still some degrees of insane ... but it's not him being a dick and saying "I'm a sociopath" and fangirls swooning over his icy blue eyes and cheekbones, CBS!Sherlock is a bit of a dick because he's got his mind on other things and I haven't seen him cruelly manipulate anyone quite yet. More "absentminded professor" than "asshole who gets on crimescenes because his brother runs MI6." Basically, he's a dick but I can see why Watson would hang around with him. Gotta be honest, sometimes I don't see why BBC!Watson hangs out with BBC!Sherlock. Not a lot of respect going on there most of the time. More like two adrenaline junkies getting high together running through London. Also, I like how he talks to the police, he's a little rude but he's trying to be helpful, not swanzing in and solving the case and calling people morons for not noticing. I can understand why he gets let in to consult, he helps with cases and points out stuff other people don't notice right off. That's a GOOD thing. He doesn't insult people and expect to get let back on crime scenes.

Ok, ok, need to stop comparing the two shows. That's not why we're here.

Um ... Joan Watson is awesome. And ... TATTOOS! Skinny adorable man covered in TATTOOS! Who was totally handcuffed seconds before the first scene of episode 1!

... I have needs, mmmmkay? Elementary knows them. Awesome, realistic female character who won't take this guy's shit no matter how clever he is, and a clever gangly guy who's got kinks under all those layers.

And they are best platonic buds. Joan is not having any of his bullshit. Sherlock thinks she should get some orgasms in her life from her old flame so she'll feel better. I haven't had a platonic male/female friendship I loved this much since the Doctor and Donna. That is a GOOD association to be building.

So, basically, I love it, I shouldn't be watching it now because I have mountains of work but whatever, and ... yeah. Thank you everyone who told me to watch it and please bear with me while I slowly catch up.

Edit:

"Are you here to kill me, Mr. Holmes? Because I have to admit I find the possibility very … exciting."
I'm trying to find an emoticon or an onomatopoeia that can fully encompass my reaction to that line and Sherlock's responding Look.
Something like O.O or *sproing* or something indicating wide eyes and a Something Else Also Rises situation. Except I lack the genitalia required. But the term "ladyboner" really bugs me for some reason. So ... um ... we'll get back to that, ok?

Another Edit:
Ok, on episode 4, in the past three minutes Holmes asked a secretary for her name when he didn't even need to, and sent a bottle of expensive wine to a less-than-rich dude who's about to propose to his girlfriend in a swanky restaurant. Oh, Holmes, baby, I love you so much! You compliment Watson and treat her with ... well, with your best efforts at "respect" most of the time and you're a nice guy where it counts. Like last episode, dude cared about saving a little kid, not about catching a bad guy or being "right" or looking cool or whatever.
