I seriously need to stop this ...
Jun. 9th, 2009 05:45 pmWatched Gangs of New York for the first time, today. As it is when I watch a stupendously good movie, it took me a while to shake the feeling of shock I got as the credits started to roll. Even now, hours after I finished, I'm still having a hard time trying to articulate my feelings.
First off, it's a MUST SEE. And Leonardo DiCaprio is hot. And (spoiler for the first ten minutes!) Liam Neeson needs to stop dying in every movie he's in. And Leonardo DiCaprio is hot. And OMG the period clothing I wanted so many of those costumes yummy costume porn OM NOM NOM! And have I ever told you guys about how I think Leonardo DiCaprio is hot? I don't know why ... he's got this sort of pretty-boy thing going for him, but when I try and scrutinize his hotness, he doesn't look all that attractive. It's an odd sort of actor-crush for me. Oh, and isn't it strange that Liam Neeson has been in two movies now where he's had a hot pretty boy for a son? Kingdom of Heaven ... Gangs of New York ... probably some more movies of his that I have yet to see (please post recs in comments, I ♥Liam Neeson!) Cameron Diaz surprised me in this movie in a good way, though it was kinda strange to see her with a natural hair-color and not CGI cartoonified. And OH MY GOD THE MUSIC I WANT THE CD NOW *jumps to youtube to listen there*
Plus, me being a total Historical-Fiction Whore, this film was like the ultimate Christmas present send down from God or something. Sure, certain things were innacurate (re: the Chinese community having a pleathora of wiminfolk) but the kickass music, guilty-pleasure gore, knifeporn, costumeporn, historyporn, and adorablesexyhot Leonardo DiCaprio MORE than make up for the TINY flaws.
Oh, and Daniel Day-Lewis is amazing. 'Amazing' isn't enough. The only time I've laughed, flinched, and jaw-dropped MORE at a single character was when I saw Heath Ledger play the Joker in The Dark Knight. (No one will ever beat Ledger's shock-inducing preformance in that, but Daniel Day-Lewis comes about halfway towards it, which is closer than anyone I've ever seen, and he does it without looking like he's even trying. That scares me.)
So, yeah, fantastic movie, great preformances on all fronts (though very much deserving of an R-rating. There's boobies, curse-words, and violence. Oh, there is violence.)
So, that's all I've got to say, I guess ...
... OH MY GOD THE SLASHY POTENTIAL!
BILL KEPT A PICTURE OF VALLON ON HIS WALL FOR SIXTEEN YEARS!
JOHNNY WAS TOTALLY CRUSHING ON AMSTERDAM, NOT JENNY! OR MAYBE BOTH! THAT WOULD BE HOT TOO!
And good LORD, don't get me started on Bill and Amsterdam's ridiculous, disturbing, hot, 'are they going to start making out now?! That actually would not surprise me!' slashible interactions. I ... just ... where does one begin with that kind of relationship?! akjlfjadlfajdlajfalfjalkdfjalfjalfjla!!!
*kerslump*
In other news, my cold appears to be going away *fingers crossed* I've been having some great creative inspirations for my personal writings, as well as some fanfics, and the yearly literarly magazine I compile IS COMPLETE! HUZZAH!
*slumps some more*
I got a Netflix of Eureka in the mail today. I think I'll check that out tonight ...

Date: 2009-06-10 01:53 pm (UTC)Man's got good taste, that's all I'm saying.
Daniel Day-Lewis is a terrifyingly good actor. I understand that he only takes roles he considers sufficiently challenging and nuanced, and if he's been in more movies than usual lately, I suppose that's a testament to the quality of scripts recently.
Heath Ledger was great as the Joker--he had that "this isn't a human being, it's an elemental force" thing going, which is the quality most intrinsic to and hardest to grasp about the character--but for me, the definitive performance is still the Animated Series Joker, voiced by Mark Hamill. For which reason, I cannot wait for the Arkham Asylum video game...
But I do need to see Gangs of New York, yes. Oh yes.

That is a VERY good way of putting it. He just ... guh. *shivers*

Oooo, that's interesting! Good on him!

*nodnod* No preformance has ever shocked my like that, and I don't think anyone will ever top it.
I really hope that they don't bring someone in to play the Joker in the next movie. I think they could manage to have him behind the scenes in Arkham and use cut scenes or something, and have him using Harley Quinn as a kind of cat's paw. They could even throw in another villain, like Poison Ivy, or the Riddler (David Tennant wants to play the Riddler someday, geeky fanboy that he is) or the Penguin or something. (Batman gets the best villains, how'd he manage that?)
but for me, the definitive performance is still the Animated Series Joker, voiced by Mark Hamill.
I really need to watch the Animated Series, don't I? I just started watching 'X-Men Evolution' last month ... I'm gonna be watching a lot of cartoon this summer, aren't I?
But I do need to see Gangs of New York, yes. Oh yes.
OH MY GOD YES! I just saw it this week, and I already want to rent it all over again!
