I think is because Coulson was closer to them in some way. He has been in all the movies in some way or another and made an impression. It was him and not the 80 people, as bad as it sounds, it hit closer to home. I guess? I mean, that's what the movie was doing, but I didn't buy it. Know who's going to be sad about Coulson dying? Pepper, Fury, Maria, and maybe Clint and Natasha depending on how much they liked him. I can see Steve being motivated by that, but he was already motivated so script-wise, why kill the Captain American fanboy S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. If they were trying to work in an angle of "people look up to you guys and you can't even work together" or something, the movie missed a huge opportunity to pull something like that.
Also, they establish they were not a team and they were not heroes, they actually said it. After Coulson, it was them trying to change that and actually trying to be a team. I think it worked. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point, then.
I love what several authors on AO3 have done with that potential; there are many great fics out there now. Any links you have on hand? I've been lurking on the kink meme and poking around some communities, but recommendations from friends are always best.
I like these two more as a BROTP, science bros 4ever! I could read them as that, or as a pairing. (I could read Bruce with anyone, really. I just love Bruce, ok? *blushes*) Honestly, what I ship is Pepper/Tony/Bruce, because Pepper/Tony is so wonderful in the movies but I also want Tony/Bruce and I think Pepper and Tony inviting Bruce into their relationship would be lovely.
