Yes, because they are normal. Loki is not normal.
Fooled me for the first half of the movie! Just seemed like a quiet smart guy trying to talk things into happening instead of hitting them. Then all of the sudden he's crazy for some reason. Was he always crazy? Whaaaaaaa?

If he was supposed to be the main villain, or more accurately the main antagonist, we should have had a few more scenes with him to explain what the hell was going on in his head, even if it was just that he's got a brain full of crazy cats.

Think of it like a Shakespearean or Greek tragedy, if that helps you any? Loki's not 'insane-insane' he's pretty clearly not mentally well, though. he practically bleeds the need to be accepted and loved, but even if he already had that he's incapable of seeing it. It's only made worse by the realization that he's a frost giant and adopted.
Maybe? Kinda? We should have seen a bit more of the "not being accepted and loved" stuff earlier, then, because Thor and the Companions seem to consider him a friend, even if one of them does tease him about not being able to talk Heimdall into letting them through. Odin seems affectionate with both his sons, though he's about to bestow the kingship on Thor ... but Loki claims to have never wanted to be king anyways ... it's like, what exactly was his problem? Thor didn't seem to resent him or hate him or even treat him poorly.

Loki manipulated Thor into going to Jotenheim pretty clearly, he has a history of fucking with Thor, and Sif says that he's always been jealous of him. He does it because he hates Thor as much as he loves him.
Oh, right, he did manipulate him into going to Jotenheim. But he tried his best to keep things from getting to the point of violence. He wanted Thor's right to leadership contested, he didn't want people to DIE. At least, not then. At least, when nobody was looking at him he wasn't grinning at the chaos around him. He wanted to get everyone out of that situation and back home, shown in his reaction to when Thor gets insulted and starts beating on the jotuns.
I didn't get "hatred" until he was talking to Thor in the cell and telling him their dad was dead, and even then it could be construed that he wanted to keep Thor away from Asgard ... because let's be real, the Thor at the beginning of the movie would not have made a good king. He started a war because he lost his cool when someone called him "princess."

Loki had a mental breakdown. I...thought that was pretty clear?
I got the breakdown when he was ranting at Odin at the revelation of his birth ... but then he was acting pretty rationally after that for like a scene or two ... and then all of the sudden he was messing with Thor's head and sending a giant robot to kill him. Um ... what? There's a scene missing somewhere in there, I just know it ... there's gotta be ... WHY ARE YOU DOING THESE THINGS, LOKI?!??!?!? Even a "FOR THE LOLZ!" is an acceptable answer, because it's an answer! AUUUUUUGGGGHHH!

The script needed work, is all I'm saying. We needed a scene or two with Loki explaining his motivations and progress from "I want to keep Thor from becoming king because he's rash and not diplomatic at all, by making him do something stupid in front of dad" to "I want to kill my brother with a giant robot and fake an assassination on my dad and save him from it." Thor got great development in the movie that was downright subtle at times ... Loki ... not so much. He was just kinda there briefly and doing stuff for barely explained reasons. As the primary antagonist, we should have known more about him. The script had issues. Hopefully the Avengers has a much better script. In Whedon I trust.

Can't take credit for it, Bruce Banner calls Loki that in the Avengers. "The guy's brain is a bag of cats, you can practically smell the crazy coming off him,"
*snerk* Can't wait to watch that, then! (I hear Mark Ruffalo is playing him in the Avengers. *purrs* Now MY brain is a bag of cats, and they're all purring because Mark Ruffalo = SQUEE!)
