What aunt_zelda Thinks: How To Train Your Dragon (oh the shame) and Valentine's Day
SPOILERS for both movies!
How To Train Your Dragon
Random thoughts:
This bore no resemblance to the book. Like, at all. And you know what, I'm ok with that. I read the book back in the day and … wasn't impressed. It was ok, there were some funny moments, but on the whole it didn't really stick with me. I was intrigued by the idea but not taken with its execution. Liked the scrawly drawings, though.
So, the movie!
Someone clearly had a lot of fun designing and animating this thing. It looks gorgeous and was wonderful just to watch for the visuals ALONE. I don't say that about a lot of movies.
Hiccup/Toothless
… I ship it. I am ashamed, but I ship it. It's the whole "Grrr, I will KILL YOU, I have your LIFE IN MY HANDS … you know what, you're awful pretty …" thing. Gets me every time. Apparently it gets me even when both participants aren't humanoids.
I've never felt like this about any other human/animal relationship! I guess human/dragon relationships are different, because of the spiritual link that's usually portrayed between them in fiction, like, like shipping Laurence/Temeraire makes sense because they're so close mentally and soul-ly even though one's a human and one's a dragon … oh god, I did NOT just say that I WASN'T GOING TO SAY I READ THOSE BOOKS YET, I'VE ONLY READ THE FIRST TWO!!!!!! REGENCY ERA HOYAY AND DRAGONS!!!!! I WAS WEAK!!!!!!! THE PACE MAKES THEM NICE TO READ WHEN I'M HORRIBLY BUSY!!!!!!
(So yeah … Dragon/Rider relationships … there's gotta be … PLACES for this on the internet, right? *bangs head against wall* WHY?! I have enough kinks as it is! Stop giving me more, brain!)
Astrid was fiiiiiiiiine. Mmmmmmhhhhmmmm. I'd feel ashamed but … no. No I'm not ashamed. Sexy badass Viking chick: yes plz.
While this was technically a "kid's movie" it hit that "not really a kid's movie at all" niche quite nicely. The dirty jokes, Hiccup LOOSING HIS FOOT, the extreme (pretty!) violence, the nightmarish uber-dragon *shudders* … well done, Dreamworks, well done!
*History fangirl rage attack*
VIKINGS DID NOT WEAR HELMETS LIKE THAT!!!!!!! ARRRRARAARARARAAGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!
("Plus Five Speed" indeed. *cackles*)
Valentine's Day
I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie. I thought it was going to be one of those cheesy, awful romantic comedies powered by nothing but celebrity recognition. Instead I found it to be a genuinely sweet, hilarious, touching, even tear-inducing treat.
Taylor Swift as an airhead and Taylor Lautner saying "I'm not really comfortable taking my shirt off in public" was a total guilty-pleasure subplot, I must say.
Hector Elizondo is adorable as always, and Queen Latifah was glorious. I love her. The little cameos enhanced, rather than took away, from the movie.
Anne Hathaway as a phone-sex operator was probably the sexiest thing I've heard since I listened to Lord Kat's recordings of the TGWTG D&D missions and Spoony voiced a skeevy jailer.
One complaint: there should have been more variation on the romances. ONE gay relationship, and we didn't even get a KISS?!?!?!?!?? BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!! I WANTED TO SEE WILL FROM Alias MAKE OUT WITH A HOT FOOTBALL PLAYER!!!!!!
But seriously, lack of diversity aside, it was a great movie, and if you're like me and like to take a break sometimes and kick back for some shmoopy fun, check it out.

I ship Ruffnut/Astrid. Because crazy viking gals deserve each other!
Hiccup/Toothless is apparently the most popular ship in the fandom.

Oooooo ... yes. Yes yes yes yes YES!!!!!
Personally I just want Astrid for myself, but Viking Girl slash ... yes plz. (Fun fact: the Vikings had a kinda Roman attitude towards gayness. Ah, the things you learn in a Viking history class when you're a slash fangirl ...)

Oh good! I'm not alone ... *still blushing a furious red*

(*Am interested in seeing the movie, though* :)
And yay for defending VALENTINE'S DAY! :D (Epic lulz at the Taylor Lautner quote especially considering...well, yeah. XD)

Valentine's Day was a great movie, I was really surprised and happy about that. And yeah, that Taylor Lautner line was HILARIOUS.
